The Trove of Terror is Dota 2's new paid treasure, live since October 7, 2026, and it finally hands Tidehunter an arcana — his first in over a decade — while quietly bringing back Drow Ranger's 2021 arcana after nearly five years away. Both are Ultra Rare drops locked inside the same chest.

That is where the good news slows down. Between a hard no-trade rule and brutal odds, the real cost of an arcana lands far above the $4.99 sticker — so the rest of this guide is the honest math: what the chest actually holds, what a single arcana costs you, and which arcanas are smarter to just buy.

What Is the Trove of Terror in Dota 2?

Each chest costs $4.99 and pays out one random item from a pool of 15 Immortal sets plus two Ultra Rare arcanas, all wrapped in the treasure's grim, eldritch styling:

  • Maw of the Megalodon — a brand-new arcana for Tidehunter;

  • the returning 2021 Drow Ranger arcana, this time bundled with a new Sepulchral Stalker set.

There are milestone rewards layered on top, too: open enough chests and the Tormentor and Roshan each get a new look (detailed below).

How Much Does It Cost to Get an Arcana from the Trove of Terror?

Realistically, plan on around $250. That's roughly what it takes to reach the guaranteed arcana, because pulling one early is a long shot.

Trove of Terror drop rates

On your very first treasure, a Rare item drops 1 time in 2,000, a Very Rare 1 in 20,000, and an Ultra Rare — one of the arcanas — just 1 in 100,000. Every miss nudges the odds up, and they reset once you hit that tier.

The escalation helps, but not by much early on: by one estimate, your chance of an arcana within the first 20 treasures (about $100) stays at roughly 15% or less.

Rewards for 12, 40 and 50 treasures

The bad-luck protection and progress rewards are what most players end up working toward:

  • Hit 12 openings (about $60) and the Tormentor gets a fresh skin, the Obscene Eye Ball.

  • Reach 40 (about $200) and Roshan is restyled as R'shan the Eternal, with a Baby Roshan courier thrown in.

  • By roughly 50 openings (about $250) the game hands you a guaranteed Ultra Rare — one of the two arcanas, though not necessarily the one you were chasing (more on that in the FAQ).

If you collect sets you don't want along the way, six of them can be traded in for one more treasure.

Are Trove of Terror Items Tradable?

No. Nothing from this treasure can be sold on the Steam Market, traded or gifted — duplicates included. Whatever you open stays on your account.

That's a noticeable change from earlier treasures, whose items could at least be gifted, and it's the main thing players are complaining about. It also changes the math: $250 spent here buys a cosmetic you can enjoy but never cash out, and there's no cheaper way to grab a Tidehunter arcana from another player, because nobody can sell one.

Valve hasn't said whether the restriction is permanent.

Tidehunter Arcana: What Does Maw of the Megalodon Change?

Maw of the Megalodon turns Tidehunter into a giant prehistoric shark. The arcana replaces his model and animations and adds new effects, taunts and voice lines. The detail everyone noticed first: Tide now drags a corpse behind him, which Valve jokingly calls his comfort blanket and his lunch.

The arcana has three styles:

  • the default blue shark, unlocked from the start;

  • The Hammer of Maelrawn;

  • Unfathomable Hunger.

The last two aren't handed out right away — they unlock as you keep playing Tidehunter.

Is the Drow Ranger Arcana Back in Dota 2?

Yes. Drow's arcana first showed up in December 2021 as the level 333 reward in the Aghanim's Labyrinth Battle Pass, and it hasn't been offered again since. Now it's one of the two Ultra Rare drops in the Trove of Terror.

Dread Retribution — Drow Ranger Arcana (Dota 2 Trove of Terror)

This time it comes packaged with the new Sepulchral Stalker set and extra styles, so Drow can either keep her classic 2021 look or switch to a darker, tomb-themed version.

Already own the arcana? According to reports, you'll only receive the new set if it drops for you.

Which Heroes Get New Sets in the Trove of Terror?

Fifteen heroes get Immortal sets, and most of them change spell effects as well as the hero's look. Three sets drop less often than the rest:

  • Very Rare: Legion Commander — Hell's Legion

  • Rare: Shadow Shaman — Curse of the Wyrmbender; Nyx Assassin — Mesmer-Eye

The other twelve are the standard drops:

  • Anti-Mage — Daemon Hunter, the first Immortal set for his persona

  • Ancient Apparition — Shattered Sanity

  • Broodmother — Arachnid Anathema

  • Death Prophet — Silken Sibyl

  • Marci — Patchwork Protector, with a courier

  • Oracle — Clairvoyant Configuration

  • Primal Beast — Slobbering Strongbox, with a courier

  • Pudge — Greasepaint Gutbuster

  • Terrorblade — Rictus Ripper

  • Tiny — Stoneback Sovereign

  • Treant Protector — Creeping Calabash

  • Undying — Direstone Desecration

Why Are Some Dota 2 Arcanas Split Into Separate Items Now?

If you own the Drow Ranger, Legion Commander or Terrorblade arcana, your loadout may look different after this update. Early reports say these arcanas now sit in a new "hero base" slot, with Drow's crossbow, Legion Commander's swords and Terrorblade's helmet moved out as separate items.

Valve hasn't explained the change, and so far only the Terrorblade version has been described in detail, so take the specifics with a grain of salt. What it means for trading — for example, whether the parts can be sold on their own — is still unknown.

Is the Trove of Terror Worth It?

It depends on what you want from it. If you play a lot of Tidehunter, or you've been waiting since 2021 for another shot at the Drow arcana, opening treasures can be worth it to you — just go in knowing the real target is around $250, not $5.

If you mostly want an arcana on your favorite hero, it's a poor deal. You pay lottery prices for an item you can never resell, and you might not even get the arcana you were hoping for.

Which Dota 2 Arcanas Can You Buy Instead?

The $250 it takes to guarantee one locked arcana is enough for several arcanas you actually own — ones you can trade, resell or swap later. On the Skin.Land Dota 2 market, plenty of them cost about $18–28 at the time of writing.

A few worth a look, depending on how you play:

And if your inventory is full of items you no longer use, you can sell your Dota 2 items on Skin.Land and put the money toward an arcana instead of another round of treasures — check what it's worth first.

Trove of Terror FAQ

When does the Trove of Terror leave the store?

Valve hasn't announced an end date yet.

Can I trade in sets I don't need?

Yes — six unwanted sets from the treasure can be exchanged for one extra Trove of Terror.

Can I choose which arcana I get at 50 treasures?

No. The 50-opening safety net gives you a single Ultra Rare, and since that tier holds both arcanas, you could land the Drow set when you were after Tidehunter's. There's no way to pick which one.

Is the Tidehunter arcana on the Steam Market?

No, and it can't be for now: Trove of Terror items are not marketable or tradable.

Can I just buy the arcana I want instead of gambling?

Yes. The Skin.Land Dota 2 market lists arcanas for heroes across the roster at real prices — tradable, resellable and ready to deliver straight to your account, no treasure odds involved.
