M4A4 | Howl (Field-Tested)
The M4A4 | Howl (Field-Tested) is a Contraband rifle skin featuring a flame-cloaked, howling wolf across a dark body. It's the most common way to own the game's ultimate rifle finish, wearing a touch of honest scuffing while staying every bit the legendary grail.
Design
Everything on this skin points to one image: a wolf howling amid orange-red flames that lick across the dark metal of the rifle. It's Valve's own work, and the appeal is all in that single blazing motif — no repeating graphics, just one aggressive, artistic centerpiece.
M4A4 | Howl (Field-Tested) Float and Wear
Field-Tested brings light scratching to the edges and high-contact areas, but the dark base and busy flame artwork absorb it well, so most copies still present strongly at a glance. This is the grade the majority of Howls trade at, and with the finish capped at a 0.40 float it never looks truly beaten up — a sensible entry point into the skin for the look without the top-grade premium.
Howl Rarity
Rarity: Contraband — a tier that sits above Covert and belongs to this skin alone. No other weapon in Counter-Strike has ever carried it, and the finish can no longer be obtained through ordinary drops, which is central to its collector prestige.
Howl Case and Collection
This finish debuted in May 2014 as a Covert item in the Huntsman Weapon Case, before Valve reclassified it to Contraband on June 11, 2014 and reworked the artwork in response to a copyright claim over the original. Ever since, the supply has been permanently frozen with no new copies entering the market — the reason it stands among the most valuable rifles in the game.
Howl Patterns
Don't go looking for a rare pattern here — the flaming-wolf artwork is fixed and appears the same on every Howl, so there's no paint seed or "blue gem" variant to seek out. The meaningful differences between copies come down to float and whether a StatTrak counter is present.
StatTrak & Souvenir
A StatTrak™ Howl was made from the original 2014 Huntsman Case drops that predate the reclassification, so it's remarkably rare even against the standard skin's small population; the counter it carries is permanent and follows the rifle through trades and sales. No Souvenir version exists — those only come out of Major-tournament packages, and the Huntsman Case was never tied to a Major.
M4A4 | Howl (Field-Tested) Price
Field-Tested is the most affordable practical route into the Howl, sitting below the higher exteriors on the ladder — though "affordable" is relative on a skin that still trades at grail-tier, four-figure-plus money. It's available on Skin.Land with instant delivery and no hidden fees.
FAQ
Does the Field-Tested Howl look worn?
Only mildly. Field-Tested adds some scratching to edges and grip areas, but the dark body and dense flame artwork hide it well, and the 0.40 float cap keeps things from ever looking rough. From normal viewing distance most copies still show off the wolf and flames in full force.
Is Field-Tested the cheapest Howl?
Among the everyday-facing grades it's the most reachable, sitting below Factory New, Minimal Wear, and roughly alongside Well-Worn at the bottom of the ladder. That said, it's still an elite-priced skin — Field-Tested only makes it the least costly door into an already very expensive rifle.
Why is the Howl considered a grail?
It combines a status no other skin has — the sole Contraband weapon — with a supply that stopped growing in 2014. Add its bold, unmistakable design and you get a finish that sits at the peak of nearly every player's wishlist, hence its grail reputation and price.
