Rust can rightfully be classified as an extremely hardcore game that places serious demands on players. In the game world, you won't be able to sit idly by, focusing solely on resource gathering, crafting, and leveling your character. Instead, you'll be forced to engage in combat, both with wild animals, NPCs, and, most importantly, other players.

After a few unfortunate encounters that result in your character's demise, you'll inevitably be faced with the need to improve your chances of survival.

Some players start cheating: they put aimbot or wallhack to see enemies through obstacles. But we strongly disapprove of such a solution to the problem.

Other players start improving their shooting skills. In general, this is the right way, but not completely.

You can't forget that your enemies also know how to shoot, and most likely, you won't get out of the battle with them without losing health. Therefore, you can't do without armor in Rust.

Best Armor Skins and Sets in Rust

Due to the variety of game situations, it is impossible to give a single correct recommendation regarding the choice of armor set in Rust.

Your choice will largely depend on the strategy you prefer to follow. For example, if you decide to obtain useful items by looting other players, you will need a set of armor specifically for raids. On the other hand, if you don't want to engage in endless battles and plan to focus on resource extraction and operating independently from others, a different set of armor will be suitable for this situation.

In addition, Rust is a game where the difference between newcomers and long-time players is very noticeable. This difference lies in the amount of resources available. A long-time player of Rust knows how to quickly obtain resources, level up their character, and gain an advantage over others. This advantage is particularly evident in the use of armor.

Next, we will tell you which armor is best to make at the beginning, middle, and end of the game, as well as its advantages and disadvantages, and what you need to craft it. We will also briefly describe two types of armor that can be used at any time, depending on your strategy and play style.

Rust Best Early Game Armor

At the initial stage, when you still have few resources, you will not be able to make a full-fledged protection for yourself. However, this does not mean that armor should be completely neglected and you will play without it.

There are 2 sets of armor, inexpensive and easy to make, which will improve your chances of survival.

Wood Armor

This is the simplest defense that is in the game. It is quite good in hand-to-hand combat, when you are attacked with a spear, club or bow, and reduces the damage by 16 units, but against firearms it does not work very well, as the damage is reduced by only 6 units. Especially tight you will have when the enemy will use incendiary ammunition against you and this is understandable: the reason is that wood burns well.

Armor consists of a helmet, chestplate and pants. To make them yourself, you will need the following:

  • For the helmet – 200 units of wood, as well as 15 pieces of fabric.

  • For the chestplate – 300 units of wood, as well as 1 rope.

  • For the pants – 200 units of wood, as well as 1 rope.

You may be lucky and find this armor in the crates.

To improve the characteristics of wood armor, it is much more useful to give up the helmet made of wood and make a Wolf Headdress. This headdress has 2 important advantages: it is cheap and protects well. Simply put, at the initial stage of Rust, it has a good “price-quality” ratio.

For crafting, you will need 100 pieces of fabric and 1 wolf skull. By the way, you will have to kill at least 1 wolf or take the skull from other players. There is no other way to obtain the headdress as loot.

It seriously reduces damage from hand-to-hand combat by 60%, from bullets by 30% (if you add a bandana, then by 35%), and from explosions by 13%.

Bone Armor

A good combination of cool appearance and protection, especially if you've added a Wolf Headdress.

This armor outperforms wood armor in key aspects, improving melee survival by 40%, increasing bullet resistance by 25%, and providing 13% resistance to bites, as well as offering some protection against radiation.

Most importantly, this Rust armor set is fire- and incendiary-resistant.

The armor set includes pants and a chestplate. That's why we recommend you to make a Wolf Headdress in addition to the bone armor. Thanks to this, you will be able to defeat almost all newcomers in a fight.

The resources you will need to produce this set: 70 units of bones and 15 pieces of fabric.

We recommend that you pay attention to the unusual skin Bone Armor Poncho.

Rust Best Mid-Game Armor

At this stage, the best combination of armor is made from road signs and consists of a chestplate and a kilt, as well as a Coffee Can Helmet.

By this time, opponents usually have already upgraded their weapons and become more dangerous. Therefore, you need to protect yourself better.

The main advantage of Rust armor made from road signs is its balance, which means that it provides approximately equal protection against any type of attack. Your resistance is improved by an average of 25%.

You also have the opportunity to upgrade your armor. To do this, you need to make special plates and add them to your armor. You need to pay 125 Scraps to research them. Research is made on a level 2 workbench. There are the following types of plates:

  • Asbestos plates increase fire resistance.

  • Leather plates help to raise protection against bullets and melee weapons by 1%.

  • Lead plates will save you from the effects of radiation and improve protection by 5%.

  • Metal plates are similar in properties to leather plates, only giving +2% instead of +1%.

The only serious disadvantage of this armor and helmet is the reduced resistance to cold, which is understandable: metal does not retain heat well at all.

To craft these items on a level 2 workbench, you will need:

  • For the helmet, you will need 1 sewing kit, 60 metal fragments, and 15 pieces of fabric.

  • For the armor, you will need 2 sewing kits, 2 road signs, and 2 pieces of leather.

The most interesting and cool skins for road sign armor are Forest Raiders Roadsign Pants and Forest Raiders Roadsign Vest.

Rust Best Late-Game Armor

In the final stage of the game, when your opponents are particularly strong, you will need the best possible protection. Depending on your strategy, there are two excellent sets of armor in Rust.

Heavy Armor

It includes the usual helmet, chestplate, pants, and boots. It is worth noting that the helmet in this set cannot be penetrated by bullets.

To craft it, you will need a level 2 workbench. The required materials include:

  1. For the boots – 1 sewing set, 15 metal fragments and 20 pieces of leather.

  2. For the pants – 2 ropes, 2 high-quality metals and 2 sheet metals.

  3. For the chestplate – 4 high-quality metals and 2 sheet metals.

  4. For the helmet – 4 high-quality metals and 1 sheet metal.

Your survivability increases to 90% after donning this armor. This armor is especially effective against firearms.

However, there are some significant drawbacks to this armor. Firstly, you will move 40% slower, making it difficult for you to engage in solo raids. If your goal is to protect your territory or participate in team raids as bait or distraction, this armor is the best choice.

Secondly, you will have very low cold resistance in this armor.

Thirdly, you will have a very poor view through the helmet slot and will not be able to aim your weapon while wearing a chestplate.

The most popular skins at the moment for heavy armor are Heavy Alloy Pants and Heavy Knight Jacket.

Metal Armor

If you like to rob other players, explore the area, and feel almost invincible, this Rust armor set is the best choice for you.

The set includes a mask and a chestplate. To protect your lower body, we recommend adding a road sign kilt to your armor.

This set allows you to move at normal speed and does not slow you down like heavy armor.

To keep your character warm, we recommend that you wear warm clothing under your armor. Additionally, you are not completely protected from radiation, so avoid walking in radioactive areas.

The chestplate increases your resistance to cold weapons by 10 units and to firearms by 12 units. As for the mask, it improves your resistance to cold and projectile weapons by 14 units and to firearms by 10 units.

To create armor pieces, you will need the following items:

  • For the mask, you will need a level 2 workbench, 6 sewing kits, 50 pieces of leather, and 15 high-quality metals.

  • For the chestplate, you will need a level 3 workbench, 8 sewing kits, 50 pieces of leather, and 25 high-quality metals.

If you want to instill fear in your enemies, take a look at the Glowing Metal Pumpkin Mask skin. This skin resembles an ominous Halloween pumpkin from a distance.

Special Rust Armor Sets

Now let's talk about the different types of armor that you can successfully use at different stages of the game. In this case, you need to decide on the strategy you want to follow and whether this armor is suitable for your strategy. Instead of being dictated by external circumstances, you have the freedom to choose the armor that is the best for your needs.

Hazmat Suit

This suit can hardly be called armor, although it performs some of its functions quite well, for example, it improves the ability to withstand damage in close combat by 30%. Unfortunately, it does not protect against bullets at all. So, if you like to rob other players, then this suit is good only for quick attacks, followed by the pursuit of radioactive areas. For systematic robberies, it is not suitable. In addition, you will be very visible in it, like a Christmas tree in the desert.

The suit is good for when you intend to mine resources in radioactive areas, oil rigs, and a cargo ship.

In addition, the suit improves resistance to animal bites by 8%, cold resistance by 8%, and increases protection against explosions by 5%.

In order to make it yourself, you will first need a level 2 workbench to conduct a research for 125 Scraps. Then, you will need to use:

  1. High-quality metal – 8 units.

  2. Sewing set – 2 units.

  3. Tarpaulin – 5 units.

Although, we are almost certain that you will either prefer to buy it for 40 Scraps on Outpost, or find it in road or military crates for free, or remove it from the NPCs you killed. Because it is much easier and cheaper.

Rust Invisible Armor Set

In the game, there is a special armor that cannot be found or created by the player. It can only be created by the server administrator using the console command /vanish on. Naturally, this armor cannot be legally equipped on official servers.

Once equipped, the character's model displays an invisible helmet, chestplate, pants, and boots. However, other clothing and armor are not preserved.

Each element of this suit gives +50% in all parameters: resistance to cold and bites, improvement of protection in hand-to-hand combat and from firearms. However, there will still be no complete invisibility: weapons and items that your character holds in his hands remain visible. So you won't be able to sneak up on the enemy, being completely sure that he doesn't see you.

To remove this armor, you need to use the command /vanish off.
