If you've spent any time around the CS2 skin scene, you already know the legendary tale of the M4A4 Howl – the accidental contraband skin that turned a copyright disaster into a collector's holy grail. Well, Rust just got its own version of that story, and honestly, it might be even wilder.

A Skin for a Gun That Didn't Exist Yet

A couple of weeks ago, Facepunch Studios released a new skin to the item store in Rust – the Training SKS. It's not exactly the most exciting skin out there – it's a nice, simple military-style finish in black, silver, white, and gold, and it only costs $2. It's pretty standard fare for the Rust skin store.

Of course, there was one little problem – the skin is designed for the SKS rifle, which hadn't been released in full with skin support yet. The SKS itself was released in Rust in November of 2024 as part of the "Armed and Animated" update, but skinning support for the SKS wasn't released until the Naval Update. It's unclear how the Training SKS skin managed to slip in before the SKS itself had support for custom skins.

Fortunately, Facepunch caught their mistake pretty quickly and pulled the skin from the store almost immediately. The problem is that "almost immediately" is not exactly the same as "immediately" – in that window of time, about 10 players were able to pick up the skin before it was pulled from circulation.

From Deleted Mistake to "Limited Edition" Treasure

But that is not exactly what happened. Here is where things get really interesting. When Facepunch Studios officially released the new support for SKS skins, they also re-released the Training SKS 2.0, which is currently available in the store for 1.99 USD. Business as usual. However, for the few people who managed to obtain the original Training SKS skin by accident? Facepunch Studios decided to do something that no one saw coming.

Instead of removing the items that people had purchased by accident, they decided to upgrade the original skins to a new variant: the Limited Edition Training SKS. This new variant has its own exclusive tag: Limited. The description of the Limited Edition Training SKS on the Steam Workshop page reads: "A special limited edition emphasizing the premium status of its owner." This variant is also marked as Elite rarity.

Rust skin community figure Hedge was one of the first people to break down what exactly had happened. He wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "This could potentially be the rarest skin in Rust history with possibly as few as 2-3 confirmed purchases." The Limited Edition Training SKS even has its own Steam Community Market page.

The Price Tag? Already Astronomical

Collectors have wasted no time putting a price on this freak accident. Current estimates place the Limited Edition Training SKS at a minimum of $13,000, with some arguing the real value is significantly higher given the absurdly low supply. We're talking about fewer than 10 copies in existence across all of Steam – for a skin that originally cost two bucks.

To put that in perspective, that's a return of roughly 6,500x on a $2 purchase made on what was probably a boring Tuesday afternoon. The kind of accidental jackpot that skin collectors daydream about.

The M4A4 Howl Parallel Is Hard to Ignore

The comparisons to CS2's M4A4 Howl are inevitable, and they're pretty spot-on. Back in 2014, the Howl was added to CS:GO through the Huntsman Weapon Case before a copyright scandal forced Valve to pull it from circulation. The skin was redesigned, slapped with a one-of-a-kind "Contraband" rarity tag, and became the most sought-after item in Counter-Strike history. Today, a Factory New M4A4 Howl can command prices well north of $10,000 on third-party markets.

The Training SKS situation follows a strikingly similar blueprint: an item that was never supposed to exist in its current form, pulled from availability almost immediately, with a tiny number of copies left in the hands of lucky owners who happened to be in the right place at the right time. The key difference? While thousands of Howls still float around the CS2 ecosystem, the Limited Edition Training SKS might have fewer than 10 copies total. That's an insane level of scarcity, even by Steam collectible standards.

What Happens Next?

Right now, none of the known owners appear to be in any rush to sell. And honestly, why would they? The longer they hold, the more the legend grows – and with it, the price. The skin has its own Steam Market listing, its own Workshop page, and a growing reputation as potentially the single rarest skin across any major Steam title.

Whether Facepunch intended to create a collector's item or was just trying to make things right for a few early buyers, the end result is the same. A handful of Rust players turned a $2 impulse buy into what could be the most exclusive skin on the entire Steam platform.

Sometimes the best investments aren't the ones you plan – they're the ones that happen because a developer accidentally shipped a skin for a gun that wasn't ready yet.
