The New Reloading Change: Conserve Your Bullets
In a totally unexpected manner, for the first time in the history of Counter-Strike, the reloading process is now completely overhauled. Instead of using the regular FPS system where the player keeps the bullets even after reloading a half-empty mag, CS2 now employs magazine-based reloading as seen in many more challenging games such as ArmA, Squad, Tarkov and Insurgency. While previously you would keep the loose bullets with the possibility to use them afterwards, now all the unused bullets are gone along with the mag. Even if you were to shoot 1 bullet and then press R by mistake, the 29 bullets left in that magazine are gone. Valve’s intention with this change was meant to encourage players to be more considerate when using ammo.
What Are The Key Changes
Reloading a magazine-fed weapon will discard all remaining ammo, and the full new magazine is taken from the reserves.
Magazines instead of Bullets. The HUD is also updated, where instead of ammo count it shows the number of remaining magazines. However, the HUD of certain weapons such as the XM1014 or Nova remain unchanged and show exactly how many shells you have left.
Reserves are also changed. Some weapons got nerfed into oblivion, while others received an unexpected ammo buff. Here are all the ammo changes as of March 18th.

- Galil AR (+50 Bullets)
- M4A4 (+30 Bullets)
- P250 (+13 Bullets)
- CZ75-A (+12 Bullets)
- FAMAS (+10 Bullets)
- PP-Bizon (+8 Bullets)
- R8 (+8 Bullets)
Biggest Nerfs:
- SSG-08 (-70 Bullets)

- Tec-9 (-36 Bullets)
- MP5-SD and MP7 (-30 Bullets)
- UMP-45 (-25 Bullets)
- AWP and M4A1-S (-20 Bullets)

How This Impacts the Game
There are a few key changes that players have to keep in mind after these updates:
Reloading out of habit when defending the site or after killing someone is now a luxury, especially if you’re using a weapon with a low number of spare mags.
Smoke spamming will probably become more challenging for a number of weapons. If you use up half of your mag for smoke spamming, you’ll face a tough choice whether to reload and sacrifice some of the remaining ammo or risk engaging with what you have left.
The gun meta will shift in the coming weeks or months. Some weapons are heavily affected by this update. For example, the fan-favorite M4A1-S now has only 3 spare 20 round magazines, while the M4A4 sits at a comfortable 4 spare 30 round mags. This change is the second unofficial M4A1-S nerf after the mag capacity was reduced from 25 to 20 in 2022. Simultaneously, the M4A4 will now have more spare mags than AK-47.

The AWPers will be even more miserable than before, considering that they only have 2 spare magazines to work with. Take into consideration how often players tend to reload the AWP before actually running out of bullets. This change makes it considerably riskier to invest in AWP in general. Earlier today, m0NESY expressed his frustration with the AWP changes: “Again, a nerf to the AWP, just remove it from the game already!”

Us, the XM1014 and Negev chads will finally face less harsh treatment from the toxic CS2 player base, since they will all be busy conserving their ammo while we spray the haters away.

Will These Changes Affect Skin Prices?
There is a possibility of slight changes on the skin market. Players will be forced to utilize some off-meta weapons more frequently, and consequently use respective skins. Don’t expect to see some major changes, but look out for the small price bumps of the P2000 and M4A4 skins.
Conclusion
It seems that Valve strives for more challenging and tactical changes in the game, which will definitely add to the strategic aspect of the CS2 gameplay. This change won’t go unnoticed and players will probably come up with new creative ways to overcome new challenges that stem from this chaotic update. We’ll probably see more off-meta weapons being used in regular games and maybe even on the pro stage. You might want to bind Reload to a different button in the next few days to prevent some outrageously disastrous plays.
