In 2026, Retakes remains a fast-paced, training-focused mode where teams jump straight into the most intense part of a round. Instead of playing out a full match, players dive immediately into clutch scenarios that test aim, positioning, utility usage, and teamwork. Whether you’re trying to sharpen your mechanics, learn better post-plant setups, or simply enjoy quick, action-packed rounds, Retakes is one of the most efficient ways to practice CS2 fundamentals.

What is CS2 Retake?

CS2 Retakes is a special game mode, where players skip the early round and jump directly into the most intense moment: retaking or defending a bomb site after the bomb has already been planted.

Instead of playing full rounds with economy and rotations, Retakes focuses on short, high-pressure scenarios. Players are split into two teams:

  • Terrorists (T side): Defend the bomb after planting.

  • Counter-Terrorists (CT side): Work together to retake the site and defuse the bomb.

At the start of each round, players are given random weapons and utility loadouts, encouraging them to adapt quickly and learn different setups. Rounds usually last just 20–40 seconds, making the mode extremely fast and ideal for practice.

Does CS2 Have Retakes?

Retakes were first introduced in December 2020 alongside Operation Broken Fang. Even after the ending of the operation, Valve kept this popular game mode in CS:GO, transferring it to War Games section. But after the release of CS2, Retakes didn’t appear. They came back to the game in October 2025.

How to Play Retakes on CS2?

Since Valve added back this mode to the game, it has become simpler to practice retakes with your teammates. Follow the instructions:

  1. Open CS2

  2. Press “Play”, then Matchmaking.

  3. Now choose the game mode “Retakes”.

  4. So you can choose two different map pools: Defusal Group Alpha (Inferno, Mirage, Dust 2, and Vertigo); or Group Delta (Train, Anubis, Ancient, Overpass, and Nuke).

Now you’ll play Retakes mode, where each round you will get to a fast-paced 4v3 after-plant scenario (4 CT and 3 T). Select your loadout card each round, check map to coordinate with your teammates, and use your resources wisely to defuse or defend the planted bomb.
