The M4A4 | Griffin (Battle-Scarred) is a Restricted rifle skin with a hand-painted griffin over a brown finish, in its most heavily worn condition. It's the cheapest way into the artwork, trading surface condition for the lowest entry price.
Design
Griffin keeps its focus on the art: a hand-painted griffin — eagle above, lion below — laid across a warm brown finish for a mythical, painterly aesthetic instead of a military one. Designed by Valve in-house, it leans entirely on illustration. It ships with a fitting in-game line: "Felix handpicked his team from operators all over the world... and while people question their personalities, they never question the results."
M4A4 | Griffin (Battle-Scarred) Float and Wear
At Battle-Scarred the finish wears its damage openly — heavy scratching and paint loss spread across the receiver, and the brown coat is worn thin in places. The griffin illustration survives as the detail that keeps the skin readable. This finish is float-capped at 0.80, so it never reaches the very extreme end of the wear scale, and the design stays legible even at its roughest.
M4A4 | Griffin Rarity
Rarity: Restricted — the purple grade, ranked above Mil-Spec and below Classified in the standard weapon tiers. Pulling one is genuinely uncommon, though it stops short of the rarity of the game's top Covert reds.
M4A4 | Griffin Case and Collection
The Griffin is a Vanguard Collection skin, unboxed from the Operation Vanguard Weapon Case that launched with Operation Vanguard on November 11 2014. The Restricted tier as a group unboxes roughly 15.98% of the time from the case (that odds figure is shared across the tier), and since the Vanguard Case is out of the active drop pool, supply is fixed — buyers get most copies on the market instead of from a case.
M4A4 | Griffin Patterns
Since the griffin illustration is applied the same way on every copy, the Griffin has no random pattern variation — there's nothing like a paint seed or "blue gem" to hunt for. Wear and float are all that set one copy apart from another.
StatTrak & Souvenir
There's also a StatTrak™ M4A4 | Griffin, which adds a confirmed-kill counter; it's a scarcer and costlier drop than the standard version, and the counter is permanent, following the item through any trade or sale. No Souvenir edition exists — Souvenir weapons are handed out only through Major-tournament packages, and the Operation Vanguard Weapon Case was never a Major souvenir drop.

FAQ
Is the Battle-Scarred Griffin still recognizable?
Yes. Despite the heavy scuffing, the warm brown base and the hand-painted griffin keep the design readable at a glance in-game. Battle-Scarred is about accepting visible wear in exchange for the lowest price, not losing the artwork entirely, and the earthy palette takes the damage in stride.
Why doesn't the Battle-Scarred Griffin look completely trashed?
Because the finish is float-capped at 0.80 rather than the full 1.0, its Battle-Scarred copies never hit the most extreme wear. Combined with a brown base that absorbs damage, the Griffin stays more legible here than many brighter, lighter-toned skins do at the same grade.
Is there a StatTrak Griffin?
Yes. A StatTrak edition exists and tracks confirmed kills on a permanent counter that stays with the weapon through trades and sales. It's a scarcer, pricier drop than the standard Griffin. There is no Souvenir version, since Souvenir weapons come only from Major-tournament packages and the Vanguard Case was never one.
