M4A4 | Griffin (Field-Tested)
The M4A4 | Griffin (Field-Tested, FT) is a Restricted rifle skin with a hand-painted griffin set over a warm brown finish, here with a touch of honest wear. Field-Tested is the most common and affordable way to own the design, and the earthy base shrugs off much of the scuffing.
Design
Griffin's look is all about the artwork: a hand-painted griffin — the mythological eagle-lion hybrid — rendered across a warm brown finish for a storybook, artistic vibe. Valve designed it in-house, favoring painterly illustration over camo or bold graphics. It ships with a fitting in-game line: "Felix handpicked his team from operators all over the world... and while people question their personalities, they never question the results."
M4A4 | Griffin (Field-Tested) Float and Wear
At Field-Tested the finish takes on light scratching along the edges and raised metal, but the warm brown base hides it well, so most copies still read tidy at a glance. The griffin illustration stays legible regardless of float. This is the grade most players picture for the skin — the balance point between looks and price.
M4A4 | Griffin Rarity
Rarity: Restricted — the purple tier. It sits one step above Mil-Spec and one below Classified, placing it firmly in the uncommon band of the standard weapon grades rather than the rarest Covert bracket.
M4A4 | Griffin Case and Collection
This finish is part of The Vanguard Collection and is unboxed from the Operation Vanguard Weapon Case, which arrived with Operation Vanguard on November 11 2014. The Restricted tier drops around 15.98% of the time from the case (that figure is shared across the tier's skins), and because the Vanguard Case is no longer in the active drop pool, supply stays fixed — the market, not unboxing, is where most copies come from.
M4A4 | Griffin Patterns
Because the griffin illustration sits the same way on every Griffin, the finish carries no random pattern variation — nothing like a paint seed or "blue gem" to track down. Wear and float are all that separate one copy from the next.
StatTrak & Souvenir
A StatTrak™ M4A4 | Griffin does exist and brings a confirmed-kill counter along; it's a scarcer, more expensive drop than the plain skin, and that counter is permanent — it carries over whenever the item is traded or sold. A Souvenir version was never made, since Souvenir weapons come only from Major-tournament packages and the Operation Vanguard Weapon Case was never a Major souvenir drop.

Field-Tested is the value sweet spot of the range — cheaper than Minimal Wear (MW) while keeping most of the look, which is a big part of why it's the most traded grade of the skin. FAQ
Does the Field-Tested Griffin look worn?
Only lightly. The warm brown base masks scratches unusually well, so a Field-Tested copy reads as tidy to most eyes, with edge wear showing only on close inspection. The hand-painted griffin stays fully legible at any float in this grade, so the skin's signature detail always comes through clearly.
Is Field-Tested the best value Griffin?
For most buyers, yes. It costs noticeably less than Minimal Wear but keeps most of the look thanks to the wear-hiding brown base, and it's the most common grade on the market. Well-Worn (WW) and Battle-Scarred (BS) are cheaper still if you want the lowest entry price and don't mind heavier scuffing.
Who made the M4A4 | Griffin?
It's a Valve in-house design, not a community Workshop submission. That shows in the finish itself — an illustration-led piece pairing a warm brown coat with a hand-painted griffin — a more artistic, painterly direction than the graphic and camo skins that share the Operation Vanguard Weapon Case with it.
