General info
Despite the similar naming pattern, these two SMGs are based on entirely different real-life weapons. The MP9 was introduced by the Swiss manufacturer Brugger & Thomet back in 2001, as a continuous development of Steyr’s TMP, and it was mostly used by the special forces and police units across the world. The Heckler & Koch MP7 is a personal defense weapon, introduced by the German manufacturer in 2001 and was meant to compete with the oh-so familiar P90. Both MP7 and MP9 have a couple of distinct features like the protruding barrel and the magazine, the presence of a forward pistol grip and a top-mounted Picatinny rail, making them somewhat similar in terms of appearance.
In-Depth Comparison Of The MP7 vs MP9 in CS:GO/CS2
In order to establish which gun is a better one, we have to take into account multiple factors and characteristics, including the weapon’s fire rate, control, damage and a few other metrics. We’ve done a similar comparison with MP5 and MP7 that you can read by clicking this link. We’ve established that MP7 edges MP5 in terms of raw firepower, and now let’s take a look at how MP9 fares against its main rival.
Fire rate
The obvious winner here is the MP9, since its fire rate is significantly higher. One can feel the difference in the speed of these two SMGs, with MP9 being capable of shooting 857 rounds per one squeeze, whereas MP7 is a substantially slower weapon with a rate of fire of 750. It’s a common knowledge within the casual players and esports fans alike, since the MP9 is such a regular weapon of choice in pro play. Also, it is important to mention that the reload speed of the MP9 is a whole second faster, which can be crucial in a prolonged fight.
Spray pattern and control
The MP7 is easier to control than MP9, having 7.7% lower recoil stats. You would have an easier time controlling MP7 while standing, crouching or running. Both guns are fairly easy to control, as long as you spray with short bursts and clamp in the chest and head. The good news is that the recoil for both weapons is slightly lower compared to their predecessors in CS:GO.
Accurate range
The two SMGs are similar in terms of accurate range – 14 meters on MP7 and 16 meters on MP9. We believe this metric doesn’t play a big role in this case due to the difference in spray control, since MP7 is considerably easier to control on medium distances.
Movement speed
If your task is to run and gun everything you see in front of you, then the obvious choice has to be the MP9, since you can run faster equipped with this baby machine gun. if you love playing a lurker role, then you would profit from having a faster movement speed. Truly a perfect weapon for lurkers and backstabbers.
Damage
When it comes to the raw damage numbers, the MP7 outdamages its counterpart by 3 points. The MP7 has to compensate for its shortcomings at least in this department. However, SMGs are meant to be able to produce short bursts that would inevitably kill an opponent, as long as your accuracy is decent. These minor differences will be hardly noticeable.
Price
This is where the key factor in favor of MP9 lies. While both MP7 and MP9 have a $600 bounty per kill, the latter costs $250 less, which is very important when dealing with eco rounds and force buys. While the MP7 compensates for its shortcomings with a better control and bigger damage output, it’s hard to recommend equipping it when Galil is only $300 more for the T side. The price difference pretty much makes it clear why MP9 is used so consistently in pro plays compared to MP7.

Conclusion: Which one is Better - MP7 or MP9?
The MP9 is a more popular weapon for obvious reasons: faster rate of fire, lower price, longer accurate range, faster reload and movement speed. While the MP7 compensates for its shortcomings with a better control and bigger damage output, it’s hard to recommend equipping it when Galil is only $300 more for the T side. However, if you find this particular SMG comfortable and precise, there’s nothing stopping you from rocking it in your next Premier games.
