What Is a Blue Gem?

Case Hardened is a procedural finish: the game lays a blue, purple and gold texture over the weapon at a random offset, and that offset is fixed by the pattern index, a number from 0 to 1000 assigned when the skin drops. The same index always gives the same look, so collectors can catalog and price individual patterns. 

Most Case Hardened AKs are a mix of gold and purple with some blue. A "Blue Gem" is a pattern where blue dominates, especially on the top of the receiver, the part you see most while playing. Why Is #661 So Special?

Pattern #661 is widely considered the best Case Hardened pattern for the AK-47: the receiver is covered in deep, even blue on the top and both sides, with almost no gold. 

The copy that sold for over $1 million stacks three rarities on top of each other: 

• The pattern. #661 is the most wanted Blue Gem seed on the AK.

• The wear. A float of about 0.048 makes it Factory New, the cleanest condition.

• StatTrak™. Only about one in ten skins drops with a kill counter.

No other StatTrak Factory New #661 is known to exist, which is why it's treated as a one-of-one item. 

The $1 Million Sale: What We Know

On June 5, 2024, skin collectors and middlemen Oliver "zipeL" Behrensdorff and Sam "roflm0nster" Alexander announced that they had helped sell the StatTrak Factory New #661 to an anonymous buyer. They didn't reveal the exact amount, but said that $1 million offers had been turned down several times before, and the deal was closed after the asking price came down to $1.5 million. That puts the final price somewhere between $1 million and $1.5 million.

A Short History of the AK-47 | Case Hardened

The finish is named after a real metalworking process: the surface of steel is heated and then quenched, which leaves blue, purple and gold discoloration. The AK-47 | Case Hardened arrived in the game on August 14, 2013, as a Classified skin in the Arms Deal Collection (the original CS:GO Weapon Case), alongside the AWP | Lightning Strike and Desert Eagle | Hypnotic. 

It can drop in any wear from Factory New to Battle-Scarred. More than a decade later, it's still one of the most traded AK skins and a fixture of any AK-47 skin tier list.
